WorkSafeBC Insurance Information for Foster Parents

WorkSafeBC Insurance Information for Foster Parents
Foster parents with the MCFD and the Delegated Aboriginal Agencies are considered “independent operators” under section 2(2) of the Workers’ Compensation Act and as such it is not mandatory for foster parents to register with WCB unless there have hired people to work in their home.

Personal Optional Protection (POP) is a WorkSafe BC insurance plan available to “independent operators” to protect themselves against wage loss if they experience a work-related injury or disease and are eligible for medical benefits and rehabilitation services.

Foster parents interested in learning more about POP’s cost, coverage, and benefits can visit www.WorkSafeBC.com or call the Employer Service Centre at 1-888-922-2768 from Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm. Other income-replacement insurance plans are also available through private insurance companies.

Information regarding personal injury, third-party liability, and household insurance can be found in the MCFD Foster Family Handbook – 5th Edition on pages 52 to 54. There is also insurance information on the B.C. Federation of Foster Parent Associations’ website www.bcfosterparents.com.
