Please see e-mail below regarding BC Child and Youth in Care Week. If you know of a Child/Youth ages 6 to 24 in care who has, overcome significant obstacles in his/her life, demonstrated courage and leadership, community involvement/volunteering, personal achievements in school, recreation, or peer support and advocacy.

Stand with children and youth in care - and celebrate BC Child and Youth in Care Week (June 2 - 8, 2014)!

This fourth annual week celebrates the individuality, accomplishments, and talents of children and youth in government care. This year the week also includes children and youth on Youth Agreements and Out of Care placements. BC Child and Youth in Care Week is a joint partnership between MCFD, the Federation of BC Youth in Care Networks, Adoptive Families Association, Federation of Aboriginal Foster Parents, BC Federation of Foster Parents Associations, the Public Guardian and Trustee and the BC Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres. An array of local events and initiatives will be held around the province.

A provincial event will be taking place at the Croatian Cultural Centre, Vancouver BC, on June 3, 2014 where we will recognize and celebrate the recipients of the second annual Provincial Child and Youth in Care Awards. The B.C. Child and Youth in Care Awards are meant to recognize the amazing achievements of children and youth in care from around the province. The award ceremony will take place at the Provincial Child and Youth in Care Week celebration at the Croatian Cultural Centre on June 3, 2014.

Who Can Be Nominated?
Nominations for the awards are being accepted in three age groups: 6-12, 13-18 and 19 - 24. There will be four recipients in each category and are meant to recognize and celebrate the amazing achievements of children and youth in and from care across the province. The following are examples of criteria:

* Overcome significant obstacles in his/her life
* Demonstrated courage and leadership
* Community involvement/volunteering
* Personal Achievements in school, recreation, etc
* Peer support and advocacy

Who Can Nominate Someone?
Award candidates may be nominated by MCFD staff, delegated Aboriginal agency staff, community partners and groups, foster parents, peers and individuals. The nominator will be advised of those who have been selected by May 21st. Presence at the Vancouver event for the awards ceremony is requested. Winners are also welcome to invite family and friends to attend the awards ceremony.

NOMINATIONS MUST BE RECEIVED BY 4:30PM ON MAY 16, 2014

Selection Process:
Nominations will be reviewed by a committee of young people, MCFD staff, and community partners. Recipients in each category will be recognized at the Provincial B.C. Child and Youth in Care Week celebration that will take place on June 3, 2014, during the BC Child in Youth in Care Week celebrations.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Can nominators submit multiple nominations? Yes!

Are peer nominations accepted? If so, can an adult help to complete the form? Yes! We absolutely encourage peers to nominate each other.

Are nominators required to inform the youth they are submitting their name? No, but if you believe that the youth may not be comfortable being nominated then you should ask them first.

What is the prize? All nominees will receive a certificate. All award recipients will receive a personalized award, a certificate and a small gift.

Who chooses the winners? Winners will be chosen by a committee of youth and adults (internal and external to MCFD).

How many awards are being given in total?There will be three awards given in total. There will be four recipients in each of the three age categories, 6-12, 13-18 and 19-24.
